(97,240 posts)history they're learning about for the first time, it is often because that history was buried and denied (omission is a lie).
There is no good spin on slavery or genocide though people have tried and continue to try to put one on both.
Look at the "Lost Cause" lie the South embraces - and not just the south. I've met people from outside the south who believed that shit too.
Look at what the Trump Regime is doing - trying to hide and deny America's actual history.
A lot of the denial (from the get-go) is in hopes they can hide/bury away the damage caused by slavery and genocide - which has played as part in the continued oppression of black people and First peoples, as well as all non-white people - oppress them, control them, keep them silent, write whatever history you want that says you're the good guys always.
You learn nothing from a past that you deny; that you lie about and bury away.
