In the 1980's the idea was to emphasize the "rat" part of the word. I always remind people that there is no such thing as the "Democrat" party and that they mean 'Democratic' party. I see plenty of Dems making this mistake because it's everywhere, but it's still wrong. I call today's Republican party the "Rethuglican" party because they have become a gang of lying, thieving, murdering, raping, monstrous thugs who violate their Oath of Office every damn day.
