Maybe the kid did not know he was not supposed to be there. How does he not escalate? He is in an area he isn't supposed to be. Does he not escalate by going back in time and not being in that area? And the top video says the old man has several other charges, not for this incident, against him. Maybe the old man is looking for a fight, given the other charges. Maybe he just isn't all there.

With some folks you can be in a car with the tires pointed away from the person in front of you. You may not be escalating at all. Maybe you are being nice and tell the guy in front of you that it is ok, you are not mad at him. And despite not escalating, you are shot and killed.

Sometimes escalation is not needed.
