Never assume - Democratic aides and Citizens United. [View all]

Just got off the phone with aides to my State senator and state representative. Just wanted to tell them that it would be great if the state of Illinois would follow the example of Hawaii and Montana in prohibiting corporations from spending money on elections.

The aides to my state senator had never heard of citizens United , and when I tried to explain it , they acted like I was wearing a tinfoil hat.
The aide to my state representative had heard about citizens united but did not know what it meant. She was very receptive to learning ( very briefly) about it, and what the states of Hawaii and Montana , have done to work around it.

I used Randi Rhode’s line “ don’t believe me , check it out for yourself “ with my representatives aide. My point is that I had assumed that every Democratic representative’s aides would know citizens United like the back of their hand. That they do not is concerning. Never assume.
