to protect institutions from actual authoritarians. I submit whether one is considered an actual authoritarian requires the assessment of behavior over time instead of singular instances. There is attack and self defense. Both may involve loss of life, but they do not represent the same intent. If institutions are to function at all, they require rules and sufficient consensus to follow the rules. The traditionalists are schismatic at the very least by denying Vatican II, although they will deny it. Being schismatic, they have removed themselves from the Church. In essence, they did the heavy lifting all by themselves and Pope Leo merely went on record acknowledging that fact.
