"I want to put some speculation to rest before it even gets a chance to out of hand. I did not pay Donald Trump to make those childish remarks, no matter how much they might have benefited my campaign. No matter to what extent the free publicity and the entertainment value of Mr. Trump's remarks may help out my campaign, I would like to categorically state for the record that neither I nor my re-election campaign paid Mr. Trump or any of his staff for him to make such a fool of himself. That was truly an unexpectedly kind gesture that the Trump campaign made entirely on its own."
