I think the exact opposite is true. Too often Democrats let the Republicans frame the debate, define the terms, set the issues.

Dukakis Gore, Kerry, and Hillary didn't lose because they failed to get out ahead of attacks. If anything, they failed because they worried too much about what the Republicans said. That has always been a losing strategy, though the campaign advisors love it. It is to some extent a matter of CYA for them. "Hey we would have won but the Republicans said mean things." That's an excuse. It is like fire fighters saying "we would have put that fire out but there were flames everywhere." You can't get ahead of the Republicans anyway, because there is no predicting what sort of crap they might come up with.

The endless obsession over what the Republicans might attack us with is debilitating and demoralizing. They play "gotcha." Don't take the bait. Don't let them control the discussion.

You take the wind out of their sales when you ignore the idiots and pivot to talking directly to the voters and don't dignify there lunacy by "debating" it.
