(384 posts)Social democrats, democratic socialists, whatever they are called, or call themselves, are no further to the left than FDR. You know, the president who gave us a social safety net and a corporate regulatory system that withstood for sixty years of assault by both Republicans and Democrats. He is still oneof the most beloved presidents in history because he recognized that we need some socialism and corporate regulation to save capitalism from itself and give our people a life worth living.
Communists, socialists, Democratic socialist, social democrats, these are all labels that are bandied about in order to besmirch the basic idea that we need to put people and their needs first above the desires of corporate America. The Conservative opponents of this basic fact will use these labels to denigrate anybody that comes within a mile of agreeing with that stance, always have, always will. Don't be a suckered and join them in using those type of labels.
The electorate is evolving. One generation and their ideas goes and dies out and makes way for the ideas of the next. Boomers, the generation of hippies and Reagan Democrats, is going away. Millennial and Gen Z are moving in. They look around, just like the boomers did, see problems that need solving, and are going to apply their own solutions. You can either continue to fight a losing rearguard action, or wake up and embrace the new. Either way, it's still going to happen.
For fifty plus years the political pendulum has been swinging to the right, it's about time it started back to the left, and with Mandahmi, AOC and their cohorts we see that happening. This doesn't mean we're going to see the means of production seized or anything like that. What it could mean is something more in the middle, something FDR envisioned and worked for, a democratic society where everybody is secure and taken care of, allowed to flourish to the best of their abilities, and corporate America doesn't ruthlessly prey upon the rest of us. What's so wrong with that?
