Donald Trump's Justice Department is quietly handing guns back to people convicted of crimes, and moving to re-legalize the exact device a gunman used to murder ten people in a Colorado grocery store. As reported by NPR and confirmed by CNN and the Center for American Progress, the DOJ is finalizing roughly 30 changes to federal gun policy, nearly all of them straight off the gun industry's wish list.
The National Rifle Association is openly calling it "the golden age for the Second Amendment." Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche put the administration's position plainly at a press conference: "The Second Amendment will never be treated as a second-class right." Two of these changes have gun-violence experts most alarmed. The first would scrap background-check requirements for certain private gun sellers. The second would lift the federal ban on pistol stabilizing braces. Those braces let a pistol be fired like a rifle, and one was used in the 2021 Boulder shooting that killed ten people in a King Soopers grocery store. The administration wants that device legal again.
Then there is the part that should end the "law and order" branding for good. The DOJ has published a proposed rule to reboot a dormant program that restores gun rights to people who were convicted of crimes and legally barred from owning firearms. The Justice Department's own announcement frames it as ending the "disenfranchisement" of Americans "with criminal histories." The same administration that sends masked agents to grab landscapers and separate families from their children is building a formal pipeline to put guns back in the hands of convicted felons, one approval at a time. The stated reason for all of it is the Second Amendment. The real driver is money. Every rollback here maps to a specific demand from the gun lobby, the industry that profits each time a background check gets skipped or a restriction disappears. Gun-control groups reviewing the changes said the through-line is not safety and not rights. It is sales.
Violent crime fell over the last several years, partly because of the enforcement rules this DOJ is now dismantling. They are tearing out the measures that were working, at the request of the people who profit when they're gone. They found the one group of criminals they want armed. And they found the one lobby they'll never say no to.
