Dante's Inferno:
Corrupt Politicians and Grafters (Circle 8, Pouch 5)

Known as barrators (those who sold public offices, took bribes, or traded political favors), these politicians are plunged into boiling pitch. The sticky tar represents their sticky fingers and murky dealings on Earth. The devils, known as the Malebranche, tear them apart with hooks if they surface.

And that is being kind!
