Mary Jo Kopechne‘s death caused by Ted Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick car accident didn’t disqualify him from office. But imagine if it did —all the good Ted Kennedy did as a Senator and national leader never would have happened. Just because of a very bad decision before he turned his life around.

I don’t pretend to know Platner’s past, and as a non-Mainer, it’s none of my business because he wouldn’t be representing me. Everyone has a past that they are not proud of. Some obviously worse than others. Luckily, many people recognize their destructive patterns and turn their lives around. If you believe in redemption, then you should let today’s current person go about doing good to make the world a better place. And if you don’t believe in redemption, people who make bad-to-horrific choices in life are doomed to pay penance forever, never given the option to make a meaningful contribution towards a better society.

Platner, as a Demoratic Socialism type, represents a massive change to entrenched power and threatens to turn the tables on existing power. In the 60s, such people were eliminated by an assassin’s bullet. Today all it takes is unsubstantiated allegations to the MSM who are happy to repeat it without performing their journalistic duties that used to be performed in the past.

If a person commits a crime and is found guilty in a court of law, let them suffer the adjudicated consequences. Otherwise focus on today and where we are headed tomorrow.
