I was born and raised in San Antonio. I used to love Texas. I used to be proud to be a Texan. Then the Texas powers that be decided to embrace the worst aspects of the state; provincial anti-intellectualism, xenophobia, the ridiculous image of the rootin'-tootin', six-gun shooting' cowboy, the hard-line religious fundamentalism, etc; instead of the best and most admirable aspects: an advanced center for scientific study, cosmopolitan cities, some of the finest universities in the land, a rapidly diversifying energy profile, etc.

I'm a true-blue, apple-juice in my veins, rain-loving Washingtonian now. But as a Texan born-and-raised, I reserve the right to scorn the shithole the worst Texans imaginable are trying to turn it into.
