Republican faith in the economy plummets [View all]

The confidence Republicans have in President Donald Trump’s economy is sinking in 2026, according to a new poll, a trend that spells trouble for the GOP as the November midterms approach.

According to a new Harris poll commissioned by The Guardian, 95 percent of Americans now believe the country is in the midst of an affordability “crisis.” The pessimism has grown across political affiliations and with a clear increase following the launch of the Iran war on February 28.

A majority (57 percent) of Americans say the U.S. economy is getting worse, compared to 46 percent in February. Over that period, the number who think the economy is improving shrank from 28 percent to 16 percent.

Meanwhile, the share of Republicans who think things are improving economically has fallen sharply to 27 percent from 49 percent, as the number who think things are becoming worse rose from 22 percent to 38 percent. The survey was conducted using a nationally representative sample of 4,100 American adults May 28-June 6.
