Ocasio-Cortez hears growing calls for her to challenge Schumer in New York [View all]

Source: The Hill

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was already seen as a strong contender to challenge Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for his Senate seat before the government shutdown.

Calls for the progressive star to challenge the Senate Democratic leader have only grown louder since a group of Senate Democrats voted for a deal to reopen the government, triggering a fresh wave of anger at Schumer from members of his own party.

Many Democrats believe Ocasio-Cortez could easily take out Schumer in a 2028 primary given the rage in the party over the shutdown deal and the party’s congressional leadership in general, a scenario that a year ago seemed questionable.

Others are convinced the Senate minority leader won’t even run for reelection, potentially paving the way for the congresswoman to fill his seat.
