Republican Asks Trump to Give Millions of Immigrants Legal Protections [View all]

Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, a Pennsylvania Republican, sent a letter to President Donald Trump with his Democratic colleague Representative Tom Suozzi on Tuesday, asking to discuss immigration reforms, specifically including a provision to "provide legal protections to millions of immigrants." Newsweek reached out to the press teams of the representatives' offices via email on Tuesday for comment.

Why It Matters

The bipartisan letter comes as public outrage over federal immigration practices has escalated in recent days following the fatal shooting of two people in Minneapolis in January, Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good. Another shooting in the city left Venezuelan migrant Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis injured during an attempted detention.

Democrats have repeated calls for ICE to leave the state and communities nationwide. DHS announced Operation Metro Surge in the Minneapolis area in December and has since brought in thousands of federal immigration enforcement officers. Some Republicans have broken party ranks to criticize the Trump administration's immigration efforts and federal agents' use of force in Minnesota.

What To Know

The death of Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse and U.S. citizen, has sparked public backlash and enflamed tensions over immigration enforcement in the U.S. The Problems Solvers Caucus co-chairs noted this in their letter to the president, writing: "The tragedy in Minneapolis and the looming federal government shutdown demand that Congress and the White House, Democrats and Republicans, finally work together to address the immigration and border security issues that have festered for too long," the letter said.

Fitzpatrick (PA-1) needs to be REMOVED from office and a Democrat in that seat so that ALL of SEPA is blue.
