Democrats in New York propose moratorium on new data centers [View all]

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — New York Democratic state lawmakers unveiled a bill on Friday that would prevent construction of new data centers for three years.

It would pause the industry’s meteoric growth so officials can study the impact of artificial intelligence on electric bills and the environment.

Democratic State Sen. Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Anna Kelles announced the legislation, S9144, during an online press conference.

They joined advocacy groups, including Food and Water Watch and the NYC Democratic Socialists of America, to introduce what they called the strongest data center moratorium bill in the country.
