The UK aircraft stationed there have been doing their best to intercept any attacks, but there's a limit to how long they can hold out, and the Cypriots are getting restless because they see the base as attracting danger, so it might lead to their kicking the UK out. So sending an aircraft carrier group to the region might make it look like the UK's at least doing something.

Of course, it could lead to mission creep, but I don't think there's any appetite for playing "me too" with the UK's cruise missiles this time, unlike in the past in the Middle East.

That's if the carrier is actually deployed - I don't think a decision's been taken yet.
