Good article, a bit scholarly, but the writer should have pointed out at the beginning the word was patrimonialism. It was mentioned two writers discussed this mostly long forgotten word which originated with the German sociologist Max Weber’s book over a century ago.

It is said that this patrimonialism “is not classic authoritarianism—nor is it autocracy, oligarchy, or monarchy. Trump is installing what scholars call patrimonialism. Understanding patrimonialism is essential to defeating it.” Also, it contrasts with rational bureaucratic rule; now we may have an extended ‘household’ of the ruler system, lacking organizartion, things done not following or sidestepping traditonal process.
