When he started to be noticed by NYC media, he had strategic targets of his ire. Ed Koch, the Mayor. Leona Helmsley, a rival NYC real estate developer with her husband, Harry.

Then on to Atlantic City. Merv Griffin competing to buy land for his casino. Then Trump expanded his targets to the very banks that loaned him millions and millions of dollars because he didn't intend to repay the loans.

Then it was the Central Park Five, young men accused of severely assaulting and raping a woman jogger. Trump paid $85,000 in NYC newspapers to run a full-page ad demanding that New York State reinstate the death penalty solely for the CPF. He made them the modern-day Scottsboro Boys. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsboro_Boys). They were later acquitted after another man confessed to the crime. (Trump never acknowledged or apologized.)

Then The Apprentice where he appeared to get off on "firing" people, even if arbitrarily. Intoxicated on power and prestige.

I can only surmise that his present attitude of "Burn it all down" comes from a deep-seeded response to being rejected which he experienced with Joe Biden's 2020 election. Perhaps the only time that Trump experienced a loss that he couldn't turn around. If he can't make you love him, then he'll destroy you. First by fear, then by other destructive means.
