A lot of his feeling of malice dates back to that clip, a hot mic clip from, the G7 meeting in England in 2019 where Trudeau was talking to other world leaders, and they’re all caught laughing at Trump. But (French president) Macron and (then British Prime Minister) Johnson were laughing — Trudeau was saying the derogatory comments. That would have given him a special place in the Trump seething eternal Hall of hatred. And I think one shouldn’t overlook how much Trump is surrounded by people who really come from some of the extreme margins of American life, who are very pessimistic about American democracy, very hostile to allies, very infatuated with Russia, very infatuated with the authoritarian idea. Trump’s obviously not an ideological person, but he’s surrounded by people who are more ideological in a way that he wasn’t in the first term."



The following is a conversation between two Canadians who have studied the U.S. closely — David Frum, a staff writer for The Atlantic, and Stephen Marche, a journalist and author of books including “The Next Civil War.” They spoke about how they’re coping with the chaos in the U.S., and Canada’s response to an escalating trade war. To begin, they spoke about whether and how President Donald Trump’s actions toward Canada could be explained.


SM: China must be feeling its moment. China must know it is going to be, de facto, seen as a global arbiter after the next four years, no matter what happens.

DF:At the Munich Security Conference immediately after JD Vance’s speech in which he scolded all the European countries, in which he singled out the far right, far left, the pro-Russia parties for praise. The next speaker was one of the Chinese vice-ministers whose speech basically said, you may not like us, but at least we’re predictable."
