that all Catholics went to hell, too. I was saddened by this when I was small, because I had a lot of friends who were Catholic.

I was raised Missouri Synod Lutheran. They stopped saying that. When I was a seventh grader and in confirmation classes, I asked the pastor if that was true. He told me very gently that it was not. Maybe some of them would have a harder time getting into heaven, but that was all. I don't remember why he said that.

The pastor was Senator Paul Simon's father.
