FORBES list….

9. Belfast (2021)

Belfast follows a young boy’s coming-of-age story at the beginning of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The film was written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, and while it is not a biopic, it is a deeply personal film for the Irish-born director. The film stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan and Jude Hill.

Belfast won two Irish Film and Television Awards for Best Screenplay and Supporting Actor. It also won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film feels almost overly nostalgic at moments, but it has a good mix of comedy, emotion and romanticism, which works for a black-and-white coming-of-age story, especially one set in the late 1960s.
