(13,927 posts)I wouldn't feel comfortable playing that sort of assistant role to my step-father, so I'm left relying on him to report.
It is very very tough.
I strongly suspect he is dealing with a physician who is either being dismissive about seriousness of his symptoms, or is purposely failing to convey the gravity of the situation. Or my step-father is deaf to what he is being told.
Whatever is going on, I think a second opinion is called for -- but so far that isn't something my step-father will pursue.
What is particularly frustrating is that his cardiologist recently had him do a 24 or 48 hour ECG monitoring. Seemed like a very important diagnostic. When monitoring was complete, the cardiologist's office immediately scheduled a follow up appointment. It sounded serious.
After that appointment, I asked how it went. My step-father said he had cancelled it because he had other things going on. The other thing was a regular infusion that is part of a second course of treatment for amyloidosis. He has decided he'll follow up after (random excuse).
