"Lie To Me" by Tom Waits [View all]

Tom Waits is probably the most famous singer songwriter no one has ever listened to. After his debut album he went on the road opening for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Charlie Rich, and John Hammond. He eventually signed on as support for Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention after previous support act Kathy Dalton pulled out due to the hostility from Zappa's fans. Waits joined Zappa's tour in Ontario, but like Dalton found the audiences hostile; while on stage he was jeered at and pelted with fruit. (Who brings a fruit basket to a Zappa concert?)

He made most of his money on the songwriting side and acting, having appeared in over 40 movies. Among the songs he penned were "Ol' 55" by The Eagles, "Jersey Girl" by Springsteen, and "Down There By The Train" by Johnny Cash.

His love interests have included Bette Midler, Rickie Lee Jones, and his current wife, screenwriter Kathleen Brennan. So he gets around. haha

"They say that I have no hits and I'm difficult to work with. And they say that like it's a bad thing!"
