Steve Scalise says he's set to undergo additional surgery, asks for continued support [View all]

WASHINGTON — Congressman Steve Scalise will go under the surgeon’s scalpel Wednesday, the latest chapter in his seven-month-long recovery from a gunshot wound suffered during a June attack.

Scalise, a Jefferson Parish Republican and the House majority whip, said Tuesday morning the procedure had been scheduled for more than a month. He’s already undergone several major surgeries and spent about three months in a Washington, D.C., hospital recovering.

The 52-year-old lawmaker was shot through the hip by a lone gunman during an early morning congressional Republican baseball practice on June 14 in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington. The shooter, a 66-year-old Illinois man who’d penned rage-filled screeds against Republican politicians, was killed by police officers assigned to protect Scalise and others responding to the gunfire.

“I look forward to getting this done and getting back to work,” Scalise said, adding he hopes “to be back in the coming weeks.”
