MI-SD35: Michigan Dems call out 'brazen' interference by Republican-tied group in 35th Senate primary [View all]

Curtis Hertel, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, denounced a series of ads advocating for a candidate in the Democratic primary for the 35th state Senate district, which were put out by a group with close ties to Republicans including President Donald Trump, Michigan House Republicans and the Michigan Republican Party.

The Detroit News reported on Saturday that a political committee known as ProgressiveMI, which has put out flyers and ads supporting State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh in the Democratic primary for the special election in the 35th Senate district on Feb. 3, was funded by a group with close ties to a number of prominent Republicans. According to the Detroit News, one digital ad from ProgressiveMI said it was paid for by Majority Strategies LLC, a national Republican consulting firm.

The ads have promoted Pugh as a particularly progressive candidate, pushing her support for Medicare for All policies and opposition to ICE.

“Stay out of our primary. Stop trying to trick Democrats,” Hertel said. “Try to win elections with good candidates and good ideas, not lies and dirty tricks.”
