4. Hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance

One time a co-worker told me that she voted Republicans because she thought that the government should keep out of people's business. I said that Republicans didn’t stay out of people's business if they were gay. I told her that Republicans didn't stay out of people's business if they wanted to join a union. She just shrugged and said that she didn't care about those things.

Another nurse I knew was worried about the federal deficit. I told her that Bush the Second's wars and tax cuts would skyrocket the national debt. She said that she believed that that was part of god's plan. I asked her why it wasn't part of god's plan to increase the deficit to feed poor people and to give people health care. She just shook her head in despair at my lack of religious understanding.
