I came close to being struck quite a few miles away from a storm about a month ago. The actual storm was southwest of me,while I was walking to my car after work. It was barely sprinkling and there was a lovely rainbow. As I was exiting the building the security guard offered me an umbrella which I declined because the rain was so light. That decision may have saved my life. Halfway to my car I suddenly felt a static charge and the bolt hit a few hundred feet to my west. The thunderclap was simultaneous and deafening.

Be careful out there.
