North Carolina congressman says Charlotte protesters 'hate white people because white people are successful'

A North Carolina congressman said that protesters against police brutality “hate white people because white people are successful and they’re not" — but later apologized, claiming his outrageous comment doesn't reflect his true intensions.

Republican Rep. Robert Pittenger made the remarks about unrest in his hometown of Charlotte during an interview with the BBC on Thursday when asked to describe the “grievance” of people in the street.

"The grievance in their minds, the animus, the anger. They hate white people because white people are successful and they’re not,” he said.

Pittenger then spewed further blame on government programs, adding, “We have spent trillions of dollars on welfare, and we’ve put people in bondage, so they can’t be all they’re capable of being.”
