His resignation's timely. The next phase of the Brexit Border Operating Model kicks in on 1 January, and it's sure to be a barrel of laughs.

There's been a bit of scuttlebutt on Twitter about civil servants discussing the possibility of a wholesale climbdown that would give the UK "associate membership" of the Single Market. Since that would almost certainly also require a climbdown on the issue of freedom of movement - May's big bugbear/selling point, and the origin of most of the problems with Brexit - it seems far-fetched, but I'm not making bets on anything in the current political climate.
