This is one of the standout, for me, cases addressed in Mann's "1491" (2005) and I tried to picture it in my mind... this makes it real.

It really opened up a new way of thinking about archaeology and how it is handled in academia. When I was in school, I had differing views about several archeological tenets, had some weird conversations with faculty at times. When I read Mann's book, I felt vindicated in several ways. The paths of human migration in particular.
