I was implanted in June of 2022. CI in the right ear, HA in the left.

I love my CI, but it took me a while to get there. A CI is not a hearing aid. It's a digital processor, so your brain has to learn a new language. My audiologist told me it would take 18 months to adjust, and I found that very accurate. I lost what little hearing I had in my CI ear, and all I heard at first was beeps and squeaks. Everyone sounded like R2D2. It was horrible. For months, I regretted my decision. But I kept doing the therapy (there are several apps out there to help people with new CIs) and now I love it.

I wish I had both ears implanted when I had such great insurance! What I get from my HA is so fuzzy, but what I get from my CI is crystal clear. The CI doesn't bombard with useless background noise, like my HA does.

I say - go for it. If you're profoundly deaf or hard of hearing, you have nothing to lose.
