My family was the opposite of that. In the sixties, I had two uncles who were in the thick of it. They often drove to protests and sometimes came home with an injury or two. My stodgy, conservative grandmother was all for it, by the way. She was a great person and a proper conservative who understood that such beliefs applied to politics, not to social issues. She was livid at what had been going on, mainly because she was the head of the Social Services department in that county. She saw the biases every single day.

(My little five year old ass wanted to go with them a few times. I remember being very confused as to why they would not let me, as they let me go with them to the store all the time!)

Yeah, a 'wall of silence' was not an issue in my youth. Heh.

Now... showing love? That is another story altogether. And, a very depressing one.
