1. I checked the 2014 info from the CDC

For ages 0 - 17 nationwide, 74 accidental deaths were firearm related, 763 were drownings, 72 were due to falls, 266 were due to fire, 22 were related to machinery, 89 were from natural or environmental causes, 81 were due being struck by or against something, 1,196 were from suffocation and 2,336 were related to motor vehicles.

Perhaps the unusual result in the linked article is unique to the Houston area. Perhaps this post belongs in the Texas group.

Perhaps it's also misleading to call 17 year olds "children".
