The experience is really improved when you have voice chat enabled. I haven't run into any jerks so far, but I was with a squad, and we were admittedly crap, but most of us were new and we were basically talking about the equipment / ships for the most part. So it was OK. We basically spent the entire time practicing how to fly, taking over bases when our resources were low, then returning to the warp gate area to practice some more. Nice fellows.

Apparently if you want to fly better use the arrow keys. They allow you to roll quicker, much quicker than with the mouse.
