There was some rich man, clothed in purple and white silk, that ate wonderfully each day

and there was a beggar named Lazarus, that lay at his gate covered by boils, wanting only to eat the crumbs that fell down from the rich man's table, though no one gave him anything, except hounds came and licked his sores.

Then the beggar died, and was borne by angels to Abraham's bosom.

And the rich man also died -- and was buried in hell, where he raised up his eyes (when tormented) and saw Abraham afar and Lazarus at his breast, so he cried out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he dip his fingertip in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented by these flames

But Abraham answered, Son, recall that you received the good things in life, but Lazarus evil things; and now he is comforted and you are afflicted. And anyway, a deep dark void lies between you and us, so that from hither none can pass thence to you, nor can any from thence pass hither to us

And he said, Then I beg you, father, to send him to my five brethren, that he warn them, lest also they come this place of torment.

But Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets; they can heed them.

He replied, But father Abraham, but if a dead man went to them, they would repent.

No, (he said) if they will listen to neither Moses nor the prophets neither will they listen to anything said by any man who has merely risen from the dead
