I've spent time. albeit, without the long term perspective that you have...mainly in China. Back in the 90s, I had the distinct pleasure of going to a bar in Zhongshan, Chia. A place, I had a financial stake in. Learned "Lying Dice" there and had people desperate to talk English and have a dialog. Blew my mind.
Many had never seen a gualo (white ghost) It was a most amazing time for me. They found arm hair fascinating. Guys and gals at the bar would reach out and touch my arm hairs,,,that was kinda weird.
I started a small import business in 2000, using the knowledge of world supply chains I had learned in the USA. They loved Bill Clinton and saw us as their great opportunity to fully embrace capitalism. Times have changed there, though.
