8. Agreed - I never thought our chances of beating her were more than 50/50 - realistically, probably less.

Collins is the last - at the federal level, at least - of an almost extinct political category - "the (relatively) liberal Yankee Republican". All the others were eliminated about 20 years ago. The fact that she has survived long after that shows quite a bit of personal popularity that's been able to withstand national trends - on our side, "the conservative Southern Democrat" is certainly extinct.
