And other Dems having seen Collins' opponents lose not only the election but their political careers, did not want to take the chance.

I was never a fan of Platner, and I feel very sorry for my progressive pals who are having to deal with this betrayal (for that is what it is), but he did say so much of the right things. They really wanted to believe, AND, most importantly, he could have taken out Collins. And we all want that.
