12. Late hour? It was usually said the general election starts at Labor Day

If he withdraws, there will be a candidate by the dead line in late July. From one account, some of the people who could run were running in avery tight Governor's race.

I would imagine that as such, they have at least some name recognition in Maine. Obviously not optimal, but we almost certainly get a candidate who poles far better on moral character and values.

Before the nomination happened, the polling company which reported Platner ahead now, had three interesting general election polls in the first week of June. Mills was plus 4, Platner plus 2, and "Democrat" plus 10!

I don't live in Maine and know pretty much nothing of any possible replacements, but they could get someone younger than Mills (and Collins) and without the truckloads of baggage that Platner has.
